Courtney Carter and Anastasia Cowan Were Recognized as Board Certified Specialists in Family Law
[December, 2020 (Charlotte, N.C.) - Arnold & Smith, PLLC is proud to recognize Courtney Carter and Anastasia Cowan as new Board Certified Specialists in Family Law. Anastasia Cowan has the additional distinction of being one of two dually certified specialists in North Carolina with specialties in Child Welfare Law as well as Family Law.
The full list of those who were recently accepted by the North Carolina State Bar as Board Certified Specialists can be found here. The requirements to become a Board Certified Specialist in Family Law are extensive and conclude with the taking of an examination that covers topics such as child support, child custody, equitable distribution, tax concerns, alimony, restraining orders and prenuptial agreements just to name a few. Beyond the test, applicants must also maintain a law license in good standing with North Carolina, they must be significantly involved in practicing family law related cases, and must have a minimum of five years’ experience in family law related matters.
Anastasia Cowan is a Senior Associate Attorney with Arnold & Smith, PLLC, and has been with the firm since 2015. Anastasia earned her Child Welfare Law Specialization in 2018, one of only seventeen in the state of North Carolina, and the only in private practice in the Charlotte region. Having now earned her Family Law Specialization as well she is one of two attorneys in North Carolina to have the distinction of being dual-certified in both Child Welfare Law and Family Law. Ms. Cowan’s background spans from working with social services as a county attorney to working with the Council for Children’s Rights as the Mental Health attorney. It should come as no surprise that Ms. Cowan’s practice is focused on all matters related to Family Law and Child Welfare Law in the many diverse forms that can take.
While in law school, Courtney was the campaign manager for a local candidate running for Charlotte City Council, District 6. After graduating from law school and earning her J.D., Courtney began practicing in the area of Family Law, focusing on divorce, child custody, child support, alimony and equitable distribution in the Charlotte region. In 2018, Courtney joined Arnold & Smith, PLLC, as an Associate Attorney, maintaining her focus on family law matters. Courtney strives to provide her clients with honest, direct and vigorous representation, both inside and outside the courtroom. As a child of divorce, Courtney is familiar with the various difficulties families face not only when contemplating or going through a divorce, but in the aftermath following a divorce. As such, Courtney is passionate about guiding her clients through the divorce process to achieve the best results possible.
